A dermatologist is a medical doctor, who has specialized in skin diseases. Hence, you have to go through college, medical school, and a dermatology three year residency. In addition, most dermatology residency programs prefer that you have a medical internship and residency before you begin the derm program. In fact, many prefer that you get a PhD before you begin the program. Because dermatology is the most sought after residency program, they can be very selective on whom they select, and as a rule, they only admit students who were in the top 1% of their medical school class. The salary is dependent upon what type of derm you plan on practicing: medical, surgical, cosmetic, etc. And, I would say that as a group, we are the happiest of docs!
I found this site that should be able to asnwer your questions. Hope this will be helpful.
